Dosing methanol-water mixture

Methanol is one of the most widely produced chemicals and is often used in the energy sector to produce different types of fuel.  In this process of our customer Fuelsave, a methanol-water mixture is dosed into the fuel flow on cargo ships by two WITTE gear pumps of the CHEM series. The pumps ensure the correct mixing ratio of water to methanol in the metering stage. The mixture is fed to the main fuel supply, which is usually heavy fuel oil, diesel or another liquid fuel.

The process

The process developed by Fuelsave is innovative and extremely efficient. The system reduces fuel consumption on cargo ships from conventional fuels by up to 25 % . In addition, the modified combustion process is significantly more environmentally friendly and increases the service life of the engines by up to 33 %. The required lubricant consumption is also significantly reduced and the maintenance intervals extended.  

The metering pumps deliver a water-methanol mixture at a fixed mixing ratio into the fuel manifold. The prevailing pressure ratios are around 10 bar. In the line, the mixture mixes with the main fuel and is thus fed into the combustion process.

 

[ The use of the gear pump metering system helps to optimise the combustion process. The supply of the methanol-water mixture ensures that significantly fewer emissions are produced during combustion and the engine can be operated more gently. This has an effect on both the maintenance intervals and the cost structure. ]
