Monomer feed pump

In the polymerization process, monomers are converted into polymers by chemical reactions with the addition of catalysts.

Conveying corrosive monomers

In this application, the monomer pump handles the pumping of the monomer melt into a reactor that actually consists of two reactors. The challenge in this process stage is to pump the very low-viscosity, corrosive fluid. In addition, there may also be isolated solids in the form of undissolved terephthalic acid (PTA).

Landscape

Design

The gear pump must be designed accordingly to handle such a task. To counteract corrosion, the pump is made entirely of stainless steel. All wetted parts thus have the highest resistance to the monomer.

Landscape

Safe sealing

For safe sealing, the monomer pump is equipped with a stuffing box. As this process stage is located in an ATEX zone, the pump is configured so that it can also be operated in explosion-proof areas without risk.

Special features of the monomer pump

  • Heating
  • Corrosion resistant materials
  • Easy to maintain installation

  • Heating

To keep the melt at a constant process temperature during the process, the pump is hydraulically heated. The heating manifold reliably distributes the heating medium to the housing and cover of the pump so that there is a constant temperature range.

  • Corrosion resistant materials

The pumped monomer has very corrosive properties. Wetted parts are made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion.

  • Easy to maintain installation

In case of maintenance or repair work, the pump is mounted on a moveable cart. This allows the pump to be conveniently separated from the reactor and drive unit and moved out of the plant.
