In the production of fuels, some of the required properties are usually added just before the transport vehicle or container is filled. Certain properties are imparted to the base fuel by mixing in additives, for example, depending on the intended application.


Metering pumps for additives

A classic example is the coloring of fuels, which differs depending on the service station operator. When filling tank trucks or rail tank cars, gear pumps are used for the low-viscosity additives.They meter the required additives into the main stream.. A particular design-related advantage of gear pumps is volumetric metering in conjunction with very uniform, pulsation-free delivery.  Depending on the metering accuracy requirements of the particular application, the pump can be supplemented with a volume or mass flow meter.

Precise metering in process

During the production of fuels, exact metering of the additives is imperative, as these are also responsible for the combustion behavior of the fuels, among other things. Incorrect temperatures or lubrication properties can lead to serious damage to engines.

As a rule, the filling stations in refineries are equipped with several metering stations. Each of these stations then meters the appropriate amount of additive into the main fuel stream during the refueling process, according to previously defined criteria. Blending is thus automatic and no longer has to be carried out separately.

The fuel is thus refined or provided with the necessary properties during filling.

    The advantage of gear pumps is the good volumetric metering property of these pump types. Combined with a volumetric flow meter, metering tasks can be realized here with maximum accuracy and any fluctuations in delivery can be reliably smoothed out.

  • Volume flow meter / Mass flow meter

    The use of a volume flow meter / mass flow meter ensures exact metering and a high degree of accuracy. This ensures that only the exact amount is metered into the main fuel that is required so that the fuel ultimately has the desired properties.

    Depending on the technology, repetitions with a maximum deviation of < 0.5% for Coriolis mass flow meters or < 1% for magnetic inductive flow meters are possible.

  • Additive storage tank

    In the filling of tank trucks, a variety of different additives are usually used to modify the fuel in accordance with the properties desired by the user. Depending on the intended use, additives or colorants are used. The purpose of the latter is, among other things, to make the fuel clearly identifiable, as is the case, for example, when distinguishing between heating oil and diesel.

  • Inspection glass

    The sight glass serves as a visual check that the volume flow is constant and that no bubbles or deposits have formed in the additive volume flow.

  • Main fuel pipe

    The fuel is pumped from the bunker to the transport or filling station via the main fuel line. Upstream of the filling station, the additives are then metered directly into the volume flow of the main line via a bypass.
